More Than Payouts: Why Trust Powers Royalties

In 2016, my future partners received a call from a label whose royalty accounting system had just been hit by a ransomware attack. Their data was being held hostage for £30,000.

Rather than pay, we helped them rebuild their data from scratch, and get them back on their feet. That experience made us realize just how urgently the industry needed better tools to manage royalties at scale. And so Curve was born.

Systems like Curve are more than just software. Creators, labels, and publishers depend on us not only to get paid, but for their livelihoods. And if that reliability breaks down, there’s a real impact on running their businesses, planning releases or songwriting camps, advancing their careers, or simply paying rent.

We don’t take this lightly. Which is why trust is at the heart of everything we build.

Royalty accounting used to be a back-office function that meant processing a few summarised lines on a spreadsheet once a quarter or six months. But with the rise of streaming and global licensing, royalty data has exploded in volume and complexity.

Today, a single royalty statement can include millions of lines of data, each revealing a small piece of the revenue picture. Every stream, mechanical, download, or performance royalty includes details like track title, platform, territory, revenue generated, and how that income is split between rights holders. Creators use royalty data to forecast income, evaluate deals, make investment decisions, and plan their next moves. Labels can see which platforms are driving the most engagement. Publishers can identify catalogue registration issues at their collection societies.

The demand for faster, more insight-driven royalty systems has never been greater. Copyright owners need to know how much they’ve earned, where it’s coming from, and when it’s expected to get to them. That’s why transparency is foundational to Curve. Clients have full royalty data access — not just the final numbers, but the details behind them. They can track earnings, run bespoke reports to surface the data points they want to examine, and understand exactly where their money is coming from.

Transparency only works if it’s built on a foundation of trust, and that means knowing your data is safe, secure, and private.

That’s not just a policy, it’s baked into the actual product. We designed our systems with a strict wall between clients and ownership structures because your data is yours. Curve is ISO certified, reinforcing our commitment to the highest standards of information security. One of the obligations of this certification is that no one — including other companies within the Downtown group — can access our clients’ data, other than the client or Curve, unless explicitly directed by the client. In an industry where knowing what’s trending, and what’s next can shape careers, creators, publishers and labels need to be sure that their information isn’t just accurate, but protected.

Royalty systems are only going to grow in importance. Not just for tallying the payouts, but also for actually distributing the associated funds. And as the space evolves, we’ll continue to help everyone make more informed decisions, plan ahead and stay in control, including simplifying the final step in the royalty workflow: getting creators paid. That’s what trust makes possible. And that’s what we’re here to protect.
