The music industry is marked by moments of big innovations that seem to change everything: the first vinyl LP, the MTV era, the creation of digital audio workstations, the release of the iPod, the rise of streaming services. It’s easy to look back and see these splashy moments as transformative. And they were. Each reshaped how the world creates and consumes music. But innovation doesn’t always happen in big moments like that.

At Downtown, we have a different model for change: relentless progress.

Since I joined FUGA in 2012, I’ve had the chance to lead our marketing services, advancements in licensing, and royalty accounting, all while working to grow our global footprint across APAC, LATAM, the Nordics, and beyond. Now, as part of the Downtown family, we collectively serve more than 5,000 business clients and reach more than four million creators and artists across 145 countries. Along the way, we’ve ushered in a new way of doing things—one that empowers independent artists and music companies with access to tools, data, and services once only available to the biggest players. By leveling the playing field, we’re helping creators chart their own course and succeed on their own terms.

Relentless progress is what has fueled our growth into the largest music services company in the world—and growing at more than twice the rate of the rest of the industry. It’s a testament to a culture that embraces innovation as part of our day-to-day. For us, innovation is an ongoing daily pursuit. We value small, iterative improvements, each building upon the last. It’s this relentless pursuit of progress and a willingness to embrace change that empowers our team to serve the fast-paced, constantly changing needs of the industry.

Staying ahead means proactively diversifying and refining our services to meet new demands and anticipate future shifts. At FUGA and at Downtown, our mission is to strengthen the impact of music creators and businesses through partnership and provide access to the highest standard of global music services. Increasingly, this means extending beyond digital distribution. Whether by introducing new direct-to-fan solutions or adapting to the resurgence of physical sales, our goal is to equip clients and artists with the tools they need to embrace new opportunities and tackle emerging challenges.

Innovation goes beyond technology. It’s also about finding creative operational ways to thoughtfully reach audiences on a global scale. To do that, we invest in cultivating local expertise to serve our clients wherever fans are. This means setting up shop outside of the traditional big markets. Over the last several years, we’ve focused on hiring local experts and partnering with established players in Seoul to Stockholm and Monterrey to Manila.

It took time for FUGA to become the distributor of choice for much of the independent music industry, and in that time, the industry has evolved in ways I couldn’t have imagined back in 2012. But by approaching innovation as an evolution and not a series of large eureka moments, we’ve developed from a small Amsterdam-based distributor with a international outlook to a globally renowned business that values entrepreneurship and puts the ever-changing needs of our client base first. And we’re excited to continue forging new paths to push the future of music forward.
